The Blackwood Business Network (BBN) is the trading name for the Blackwood District Chamber of Commerce Inc.  The BBN has been operating for over 40 years and is dedicated to supporting the commercial interests of our district and our traders. 

Our Constitution states that the objectives for which the Chamber was established are:

  • To promote the trade, commerce and industry of the Blackwood District in particular, and the local, interstate and overseas trade of the State of South Australia in general.
  • To promote, support or oppose legislative or other measures affecting the aforesaid interests.
  • To do all such other things as may be conducive to the maintenance or extension of trade, commerce or industry, or are incidental to the attainment of these objects.

Activities & Events

We conduct various activities to encourage networking among traders, provide interesting speakers at breakfast and lunch events and establish initiatives in the district to support our objectives for promoting trade, commerce and industry in the district.

Area Background

Blackwood

Blackwood and surrounding suburbs are nestled in the south eastern foothills of Adelaide, South Australia located in the Adelaide Hills/Mount Lofty Ranges.  Surrounding suburbs include Belair, Glenalta, Craigburn Farm, Coromandel Valley, Eden Hills, Hawthorndene and Bellevue Heights.  Blackwood, South Australia is at coordinates 35°01′00″S138°36′00″E / -35.016667, 138.6

Churches

The Mitcham Hills Interchurch Council members include two Anglican parishes, five Uniting Church in Australia congregations, two Baptist churches, a Roman Catholic parish with two centres, a Lutheran parish and a Church of Christ. There are also a number of pentecostal churches including the The Hills Christian Family Centre and The Frontier Christian centre

Schools

Primary Schools include Blackwood Primary School in Eden Hills, Belair Primary School, Bellevue Heights Primary School, Coromandel Valley Primary School, Eden Hills Primary School and Hawthorndene Primary School.  High schools include Blackwood High School, St John's Grammar School at Belair and St Peter's Lutheran School at Craigburn Farm.

Transport

Blackwood Railway Station is a transport hub with buses to Adelaide and the outer Southern suburbs, trains to Adelaide and Belair. There is also a daily commuter bus to and from the Eastern Fleurieu Peninsula passing through Blackwood.

Residents

The suburbs of Blackwood, Belair, Glenalta, Hawthorndene & Upper Sturt, Craigburn Farm, Eden Hills and Bellevue Heights had a combined population as at 30th June 2016 of 23,440.

The suburbs of Blackwood, Glenalta and Craigburn Farm had a combined population of 6,379 in 2,596 households in 2001 [1].  The combined population as at 30th June 2016 was 9,648. 

Politics

Blackwood is represented in the South Australian House of Assembly by Liberal MP Sam Duluk and in the Australian House of Representatives, member for Boothby, Liberal Nicolle Flint MP.

Blackwood Forest Recreation Park

In 1908, the Government of South Australia acquired 20.8 hectares for use as an experimental orchard. It was planted with various fruit and nut trees by the Department of Agriculture and, in 1952, a small area was planted with Radiata Pines. In 1968, management was transferred to the Woods and Forest Department and, in 1972, the remaining fruit trees were removed and more pines were planted. However, by 1985, after community opposition to a plan to harvest the timber, the land was resumed and held as vacant Crown Land. After further opposition to attempts to dispose of the land, led by the community based 'Save the Blackwood Forest Committee', it was proclaimed a recreation park in November 2001.

Belair

Belair is a suburb located in the hills of Adelaide, South Australia. A leafy suburb, it was established during the settlement of Adelaide as a source of timber. Parts of Belair have views of the city of Adelaide and the coast, and it is approximately a fifteen minute drive from the Adelaide CBD. Belair National Park is one of the main attractions of this suburb.  Windy Point (formerly known as Observation Point) represents one of the best lookouts over the city and suburbs. Belair is the site of an 18-hole golf course, located next to Belair National Park. Belair is also very popular area for mountain bikers with many trails found in the area.

Belair National Park (formerly known as Belair Recreation Park) is a national park in South Australia (Australia), 13 km south of Adelaide. It covers an 835ha area, and was the first National Park in South Australia. The park lies within the Adelaide Hills and Mitcham Council area, and forms part of a chain of national park reserves located along the Adelaide Hills Face Zone. The Belair National Park is administrated by the Department for Environment and Heritage. The Belair National Park has excellent recreation and social facilities within on outdoor environment. There are many areas of interest within the park, including Old Government House, the park Nursery, Playford Lake and the Adventure Playground. It has numerous tennis courts and ovals, and has walking, bike and horse-riding trails. The park has an outstanding presentation of the State’s native fauna, attracting visitors, showcasing the State’s park system and contributing to the community awareness of the natural environment. Some species of fauna commonly encountered in the park include the southern brown bandicoot, tawny frogmouth, brown tree frog and shingleback lizard.

Hawthorndene

Hawthorndene is a southern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia located in the Adelaide Hills. It is found at 35.020° S 138.631° ECoordinates: 35.020° S 138.631° E.

The original subdivision of Hawthorndene was created by A.E. and D.J. Hewett on part sections 871-2, Hundred of Adelaide in 1925; however, it was not until 1988 that its boundaries were completely formalised. Its name refers to the many Hawthorn bushes growing along Minno Creek as a result of seed being washed down the creek from the Hawthorn maze in the Belair National Park and from a Hawthorn hedge planted by C. Legh Winser around his orchard in what is now Glenalta.

Coromandel Valley

Coromandel Valley is a south eastern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. Part is in the City of Mitcham and the City of Onkaparinga with the Sturt River[1] being the boundary between the two council areas. Coromandel Valley, and its neighbouring suburb, Coromandel East, gain their name from a ship, the Coromandel, which arrived in Holdfast Bay from London in 1837 with 156 English settlers. After the ship reached the shore, some of its sailors deserted, intending to remain behind in South Australia, and took refuge in the hills in the Coromandel Valley region.[2]

Coromandel East is a semi-rural suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It lies within the City of Onkaparinga and has postcode 5157. Coromandel East, and its neighbouring suburb, Coromandel Valley, gain their name from a ship, the Coromandel, which arrived in Holdfast Bay from London in 1837 with 156 English settlers. After the ship reached the shore, some of its sailors deserted, intending to remain behind in South Australia, and took refuge in the hills in the Coromandel Valley region.[1]

Interesting facts about Blackwood

  • Norman Tindale, an anthropologist, archaeologist and entomologist, lived in his Blackwood residence "Kurlge" from 1955 to 1969.

Community

The Blackwood district has a strong and cohesive community who are actively involved in various interest based groups. Local businesses are also active supporters of local community groups. This business involvement in community activities provides mutual benefits and contributes to developing cultural experiences. 

The Annual Blackwood Christmas Pageant:

The Blackwood Christmas Pageant is organised jointly by our local Lions and Rotary Clubs, and has become one of the largest and most highly attended pageants in Adelaide.  A large percentage of local businesses take part in the Pageant which increases every year. Information regarding this annual event is forwarded to businesses well in advance of the event to enable local traders to take part. The BBN conducts an annual competition that rewards local businesses for their contribution and effort in creating Christmas window displays to enhance the Christmas spirit in the district. Prizes are awarded for the best dressed windows. To register your interest please contact us.
